My doctor wanted me to start using a NetiPot. I've noticed no difference in the effects from using it as opposed to the NeilMed rinse bottle. Are the benefits any different?

I used the netipot, along with the NeliMed packets for about two weeks +. I loved the cleansing effect, and couldnt believe what all "rinsed out", but, much to my surprise, I completely lost all sense of smell and taste, literally, ALL, for over 3 weeks following. Is this common? I didn't find the side effect worth it, though I really miss the benefits, as I have chronic allergies.

We go to Lake Havasu several times a yr...my 15 yr old son will be congested-SERIOUSLY-by the end of the day...I have been told it's not sinus infection (looks like it to me!) ENT and allergists say it's something in Arizona he's allergic to...but happens only when he goes in the water in summer! we go other times...no water, no problem! he gets so congested he says he doesn't want to go anymore. He blows his nose, sometimes it's brown/green, he has problems sleeping for a few nights because he can't breathe through his nose..it can last up to a week after we get home. Tried Z pack, Claritin, Claritin D, Zyrtec, ocean spray...none help with his immediate pain and suffering...any ideas?

hi Alisha, i have been a Sinus patient for a long time now and started learning swimming since last 15 days. The problem wht iam facing is that as soon as i enter the swimming pool i have very very sever headache and some time its not tolerable also...... Still i wana learn swimming. Consulted the doctors even they asked me to stop swimming but still i wana continue. What should i do? My sinuses have been a problem for years. After two sinus surgies (that didnt work) and prescription medicines I suffered through mild depression, headaches and had no energy. I had visited 3 different Allergists in the DC area and was at my wits end. I began my research in 2008 to find my own answer to this debilitating puzzle.
I found Dr Michael Kaliner at the Institute for Asthma & Allergy in Wheaton, MD. Dr Kaliner was Director of Allergic Diseases at the National Institute of Health, Pres of the World Allergy Organization, Pres of AAAAI etc etc. Who would be better at helping me?
After my initial consult he handed me a bottle of Sinol Nasal Spray for Allergies/Sinus. He told me it was made with capsaicin which is pepper. I was sceptical as I have tried so many different products but I did come to him because of his background and expertise.
This year, 2012, just about marks the 4th year I have been back to a quailty of life that I havent experienced since my teens. I use Sinol 3x a day, everyday, religiously.
If you have experienced anything like what I am talking about go to your local Rite Aid and buy this product. Use it for a month or so and you will be so happy you found this post. I am a dedicated Sinol fan and am on a mission to help others.

Interesting question. Smelling something that is abnormal or smelling
something that does not exist in the environment is generally a symptom
also known as dysosmia. Within the dysosmia, if you are smelling
something that does not exist, it is called phantososmia. The dysosmias
may be due to many clinical disordrs, one of which includes alteration
of the olfactory neuroepithelium (lining of the olfactory nerve which is
the main nerve which allows us to perceive the sensation of smell)
within the nasal or sinus lining. The rhinosinusitis may have been
caused by the inflammation due to allergy or infection. The fact that it
improved with Netipot in my opinion, caused the inflammation to improve
and the dysosmia and phantososmia to resolve. If the symptom still
presisted, it may due to more serious condition of neurological
disorder. If your symptoms recurr or persist, you may want to consult an
ENT physician or a neurologist. Best wishes.

I have a question. About a month ago I started smelling cig. smoke everywhere I went, even in my home and Church. Neither place has smokers. It was getting frustrating as I do NOT like that smell especially ALL the time. At first I treated my nose with a nasal saline spray and seemed to get relief but it didnt last. Then I got out my Netti pot and used it twice and so far so good and that was yesterday. What would cause that symptom??
