After two sinus surgies (that didnt work) and prescription medicines I suffered through mild depression, headaches and had no energy. I had visited 3 different Allergists in the DC area and was at my wits end. I began my research in 2008 to find my own answer to this debilitating puzzle.
I found Dr Michael Kaliner at the Institute for Asthma & Allergy in Wheaton, MD. Dr Kaliner was Director of Allergic Diseases at the National Institute of Health, Pres of the World Allergy Organization, Pres of AAAAI etc etc. Who would be better at helping me?
After my initial consult he handed me a bottle of Sinol Nasal Spray for Allergies/Sinus. He told me it was made with capsaicin which is pepper. I was sceptical as I have tried so many different products but I did come to him because of his background and expertise.
This year, 2012, just about marks the 4th year I have been back to a quailty of life that I havent experienced since my teens. I use Sinol 3x a day, everyday, religiously.
If you have experienced anything like what I am talking about go to your local Rite Aid and buy this product. Use it for a month or so and you will be so happy you found this post. I am a dedicated Sinol fan and am on a mission to help others.
Patty

Re: Chili Peppers and Nasal Congestion

I too use red hot chilly peppers to get my nose running. They are especially delicious if you mix them with olive oil to use on your pasta, rice, and other appropriate meals. Since my sinusitis has been unbearable this year, peppers are all I eat! Within the dysosmia, if you are smelling
something that does not exist, it is called phantososmia. The dysosmias
may be due to many clinical disordrs, one of which includes alteration
of the olfactory neuroepithelium (lining of the olfactory nerve which is
the main nerve which allows us to perceive the sensation of smell)
within the nasal or sinus lining. The rhinosinusitis may have been
caused by the inflammation due to allergy or infection. The fact that it
improved with Netipot in my opinion, caused the inflammation to improve
and the dysosmia and phantososmia to resolve. If the symptom still
presisted, it may due to more serious condition of neurological
disorder. If your symptoms recurr or persist, you may want to consult an
ENT physician or a neurologist. Best wishes.

Re: Allergy symptoms and gastrointestinal symptoms

I have a question. About a month ago I started smelling cig. smoke everywhere I went, even in my home and Church. Neither place has smokers. It was getting frustrating as I do NOT like that smell especially ALL the time. At first I treated my nose with a nasal saline spray and seemed to get relief but it didnt last. Then I got out my Netti pot and used it twice and so far so good and that was yesterday. What would cause that symptom??

Re: Sinus Headaches and Migraines

All About Sinusitis

Re: Gastroesophageal Reflux

Thanks. I have both! Discovered part way through the summer that my horrible summer of allergies was not allergies at all. I should have known when symptoms didn't get better with Sinus Rinse.

Re: Gastroesophageal Reflux

My ENT dr was the only one to help me with my acid reflux which was causing my breathing problems

Re: Gastroesophageal Reflux

wows learned something new :D

Re: The History of the Neti Pot

Hello Alisha,

These help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk for heart disease. You can incorporate these into you diet by using vegetable oils and eating nuts and soybeans. Try to avoid saturated fats and trans fats as much as possible by avoiding fatty meats and processed foods. Don't forget that is necessary for the body and without it you can't absorb the fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K).

Re: Understanding The New Dietary Guidelines

Informative post! --What about "healthy fats" i.e.- nuts, avocado, etc.? How'd that scar tissue get there...thank you Afrin! If you are on it, quit!!!! If you use it to breathe, Quit. I'd say unless the benefits outweight the repercussion (maybe traveling on an airplane with a sinus infection or something) don't touch that stuff.

Re: Sinus Anatomy

Dear readers,
I'm glad you've found this blog helpful :) I am no ENT, however, so I have to attribute my basic run down of the sinuses to the above mentioned book. If the nasal drainage is watery and thin, try saline nasal irrigation for a couple of days to see if this relieves your symptoms; however, if the drainage is yellow and thick, you should speak with your physician because you may need antibiotic treatment.

Re: Swimming & Sinus Pain

In unpolluted fresh river water, you should not experience any sinus problems caused by the chlorine. If there are other pollutants in the water, however, this could irritate the sinuses. If you do find discomfort or congestion following a swim in the river, I suggest a saline rinse with either the Sinus Rinse Bottle or Neti Pot afterwards. It is also not a bad idea to do a saline rinse afterwards even if you feel fine, just as a precautionary method.

Re: Sinus Anatomy

Very nice description of sinus anatomy.
